In a Constitutional Republic such as the United States, the People are afforded the power to check and restrain that of their government. This is to balance the needs of society as a whole versus the liberties of its citizens; affording the People the means by which to maintain their Republic.

When we citizens do not maintain the wall that seperates We the People from those who have elected to serve us, by asserting and protecting our inalienable rights then we permit our servants to encroach upon our position, our rights and our very lives.
